Event Description:
We will embark on a journey of the Hong Kong based, 93 years old, family-run Koon Chun Sauce Factory - where its soy sauce and condiments are maneuvered between histories, cultures, and world powers (from Chairman Kim to Queen Victoria), to far corners of the world (from Boston to Africa). Local soy sauce brewing process and global footprints of Hong Kong's unique culinary influence will be examined through different short stories, including recent COVID-19 challenges.
Daniel will be our tour guide and he is the 4th generation of Koon Chun. He received his master’s degree in Regional Studies - East Asia at Harvard. In the past few years, he has worked with other Harvard alumni to explore soy sauce industry’s cultural heritage in East Asia.
Taxi: inform the Green Taxi driver with the provided Chinese address (新界 元朗 青山公路 潭尾段 冠珍醬園). One-way ride from Yuen Long MTR station is about HK$35.
Tour will be automatically cancelled if the Hong Kong Observatory issues Northern New Territories Flood Signal, Red/Black Rainstorm Signal, or T8/9/10 Tropical Cyclone Signal the day before or on the day of the visit. Please contact us immediately should that occur.
Itinerary:
The tour lasts for about 2.5 hours and consists of the following:
A. Detailed presentation on soy sauce making and historical development in Asia (air-conditioned) (1.5 hour)
B. Walking tour of the factory (outdoor) (20 mins)
C. Sampling and Q&A (air-conditioned) (30 mins)
Rules:
- Koon Chun Sauce Factory is not responsible for any guest's allergies or medical conditions.
- All guests must follow factory staff advice at all times. Children under 12 should be accompanied by adults at all times.
- Large portions of the walking tour is outdoors. Please wear suitable clothing as weather permits.
- All guests must NOT touch any machinery, products, or properties unless advised to do so.
- All guests must maintain good hygiene and manners during the visit.
- Guests with gluten intolerance, flu, fever, soybean-related allergies, contagious disease, or symptoms of COVID-19 should NOT enter the factory.
- Due to the pandemic, body temperature will be measured upon arrival and all guests must wear facial masks during the tour.
- Smoking is prohibited.
- Toilet space in the factory is limited. We strongly advise guests to use toilets before arrival.
- Koon Chun reserves the right to evict any visitor(s) who violates our visiting regulations.
