Event Description:

Join us for a set lunch (salad + pasta + dessert + coffee) meeting with Dean Derek Collins (Faculty of Arts at The University of Hong Kong). He will be speaking about the art and cultural development in Hong Kong, the West Kowloon Cultural District, the development of academic programmes to support the growing sector, and the relation of them to the local and global art market. 

About Dean Collins

Professor Derek Collins is Dean of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Hong Kong, and Chair Professor in the Department of History, since July 2015.

Before that, Dean Collins was Associate Dean for Humanities and Professor of Greek and Latin  at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is a highly accomplished scholar specialising in the ancient Greco-Roman world and has published on literature, history, art, and religion. Dean Collins received his BA and MA from the University of California, Los Angeles, and his PhD from Harvard University. 

He has been awarded numerous grants and fellowships, including the most recently by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in New York to expand museum and conservation studies at the University of Hong Kong.

Dean Collins develops cultural projects and works with leading museums, galleries, private collectors, art professionals, and auction houses in Hong Kong and around the world.  In recent years, he has overseen the development of the new BA in Humanities and Digital Technologies and is overseeing renovation and construction of HKU’s new Arts Tech Laboratory.  Dean Collins is a Member of the Consultation Panel of the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority, and in the commercial art world, he is a Senior Consultant to Phillips Auction House, Chairman’s Office, Asia, the leading global auction house for contemporary art.
